India has decided to prolong the operation of imported coal-based power plants until June 2024 due to a shortage of domestic coal, according to a government directive reviewed by Reuters. Issued in February and extended multiple times, the emergency order mandates these power plants to continue running to meet the nation’s high electricity demand. Additionally, the government has extended the mandatory blending of domestic coal with imported coal for the current fiscal year, allowing thermal power plants to blend imported coal until March 2024 instead of the previous deadline in September 2023.
