Roads Ministry aims to spend over 90% capex by December

New Delhi: Officials familiar with the matter revealed that the Road Transport and Highways Ministry aims to utilize over 90% of its allocated ₹2.59 lakh crore capital expenditure (capex) from the 2023-24 Budget by December 2023. The funds are intended for nationwide road development, with a goal to complete 310 National Highways (NH) projects by the end of the year.

Experts predict a slowdown in construction activities after December 2023 due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct in the lead-up to assembly and parliamentary elections.

“Achieving 91% of the gross budgetary support capital expenditure by December 2023 is our objective,” stated a senior official.

Government data indicates that ₹99,273 crore was spent as capex in the first three months of the current fiscal year, a slight decrease from ₹1.02 lakh crore spent during the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, the government spent ₹79,015 crore this year, resulting in the construction of 2,250 kilometers (km) of highways between April-June 2023, compared to 1,977 km during the same period in 2022. However, the award of highways decreased to 611 km during the review months, down from 969 km in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
